ENG 101 – English Composition

28 students

English Composition is the standard freshman writing course. The course introduces students to academic writing. By its conclusion, students will be ready for English 201 and for the writing they will be asked to do in advanced courses across the curriculum. Students completing ENG 101 will have mastered the fundamentals of college-level reading and writing, including developing a thesis-driven response to the writing of others and following the basic conventions of citation and documentation.

Project overview

Students created projects based on their experiences of reading “This is Water” by David Foster Wallace, and “The Danger of a Single Story” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The first stage was to create an “about me” slide. The second stage was to create a response to one of the readings using words and images. The third stage was group conversations about the similarities and differences between the student responses.

The finished works were published on a BMCC OpenLab site. This is still being developed. Here is a link to the current site: Semester Project.

Why did you select this project? How does it relate to identity and purpose?

It was important to discuss what the class literature meant to the students. In order to do this, we first had to discuss how the students identified themselves, then how they related to the readings. The final stage of connecting with other students was important in understanding our group identity.

What advice do you have for other faculty who would like to implement a similar project?

Be ready to adapt the project for your particular group and have fun!
